Heavy rains predicted in Gujarat till September 19, cyclonic circulation active

Heavy showers are expected in Gujarat until September 19. The Meteorological Department has predicted precipitation with thundershowers till September 19. There are possibilities of moderate downpours in South Gujarat as well. The wind speed in the state is expected to be 30 to 40 km/h.

IMD Issues Forecast for Multiple Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rainfall with thundershowers across Gujarat till September 19, driven by a cyclonic circulation. Along with heavy showers, the state may also witness winds at speeds of 30–40 kmph, creating conditions for moderate rainfall, particularly in South Gujarat.

Light showers are also expected to continue during Navratri, offering relief from the heat but raising concerns about festival arrangements in parts of the state.

Districts Likely to Be Affected

According to IMD, the following areas are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall:

  • Surat
  • Valsad
  • Navsari
  • Tapi
  • Dang
  • Daman
  • Dadra and Nagar Haveli

The forecast suggests that five zones of the state will continue to receive scattered rainfall, though the intensity will reduce gradually with the approaching monsoon withdrawal.

Rainfall Performance in Gujarat So Far

The state has already recorded 37 inches of rainfall this season, which is 28% higher than the seasonal average. Overall, Gujarat has received 108.21% of its expected monsoon rainfall so far.

Breakdown of rainfall across regions is as follows:

  • North Gujarat: 118.72%
  • Kutch: 135.95%
  • Central Gujarat: 110.18%
  • South Gujarat: Completed seasonal rainfall
  • Saurashtra: 93.89% (the only zone with below-average rainfall)

While most regions have surpassed their seasonal average, Saurashtra remains rainfall deficient, affecting agriculture in certain pockets.

Monsoon Withdrawal on the Horizon

The IMD has indicated that the monsoon will begin withdrawing from Rajasthan on September 19, signaling that Gujarat is also nearing the end of its monsoon cycle.

Despite the forecast of rains during Navratri, officials believe the cyclonic circulation will weaken gradually, and rainfall intensity will taper off by late September.

For now, residents, particularly in South Gujarat, have been advised to remain alert to sudden downpours, while authorities continue to monitor water levels and ensure precautionary measures in low-lying areas.
