Here’s all about secret tunnel of Delhi’s Siri Fort

When the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) started digging to build a pathway at the children’s museum of Siri Fort in south Delhi earlier this week, they unexpectedly unearthed a tunnel-like structure going back to the 13th or 14th century.

The structure arose while ASI was constructing a temporary roadway to connect the front gate to the main road to facilitate visitors.

According to officials, only the aperture of the arching structure is visible, and no further excavation will occur. They also stated that the construction would be preserved as one of the museum’s exhibits.

“We were constructing a four-metre-wide path from the front gate to the main road when this arch-like structure appeared,” said Praveen Singh, ASI’s superintending archaeologist, Delhi Circle.

The children’s museum opened in 2011 and contains over 30 copies of popular monuments and sculptures from across the country and worldwide.

According to officials, a new detailed project report (DPR) has been created to install around 100 more replicas, and development work is currently underway based on the DPR.

“The museum is being renovated, and more replicas will be added,” Singh explained.

“This was not a planned excavation site, but a chance discovery.” All of the structures in the neighbourhood of Siri Fort date from the time of the Khilji dynasty, which controlled Delhi in the 13th and 14th centuries.

“We have now exposed about five to six feet of the structure and will keep it as a display for the children to show how such structures are discovered during excavation,” Singh added.

According to officials, the tunnel-like construction lies on a hill roughly one metre above the ground. Several ceramic remains dating back to the Khilji dynasty period were discovered in the same region during the construction of the children’s museum, officials stated.

Officials claim they have no idea where the tunnel-like construction leads. Senior officials have been informed of the discovery, and further excavation will take place if higher authorities approve.
