Here’s all you need to know about Operation Kaveri

On Monday, external Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that India has initiated ‘Operation Kaveri’ to bring back its compatriots who have become stuck in war-torn Sudan and that the government is “committed to assisting all brethren in Sudan.”

The minister also stated that approximately 500 Indians have arrived in Port Sudan thus far, with more “on their way.”

“Operation Kaveri has begun to return our citizens who have become stranded in Sudan.” “Our ships and aircraft are ready to bring them home,” Jaishankar tweeted, alongside a photo of evacuated residents.

Earlier Sunday, the foreign ministry stated that India is “making every measure to ensure the safety and security of the people stranded in Sudan.” “We are closely monitoring Sudan’s complex and changing security situation.”

“We are also working closely with various partners to ensure the safe movement of Indians who are stranded in Sudan and might like to be evacuated,” the ministry stated.

Apart from Sudanese authorities, the foreign ministry and the Indian embassy in Sudan are in frequent contact with the United Nations, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and the United States to secure the evacuation of Indians from the war-torn country.

Two Indian Air Force C-130Js have been stationed in Jeddah to assist with the evacuation.

According to the official website of the Indian embassy in Khartoum, there are approximately 2,800 Indian nationals in Sudan.

Along with this, there is a settled Indian community of roughly 1,200 individuals that has been in the country for nearly 150 years.

Meanwhile, 5 Indian nationals have been rescued through a French Air Force flight and brought to France’s military station in Djibouti, along with citizens from over 28 other nationalities, according to news agency ANI quoting French diplomatic sources.

In addition, according to the article, three flights delivered 500 evacuees to France’s military base.
