Himachal Rains: another round of heavy pour downs expected?

Himachal rains: another round of heavy to very heavy rain is expected in the state, as IMD issued a Yellow alert.

The monsoon will likely return to Himachal Pradesh, as the weather service, India Meteorological Department (IMD), has issued a three-day ‘yellow’ warning for heavy rain over most of the state.

Today will see isolated spells of ‘very heavy’ rain in the Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Shimla, Mandi, Solan, Sirmaur, and Bilaspur districts, according to the MeT. On the other hand, Una, Lahaul and Spiti, Hamirpur, and Kinnaur districts will get ‘heavy’ rain.

On Friday, portions of the hill state received light to heavy rain. Palampur had the most rainfall, with 147 mm, followed by Dharamshala with 50 mm, Manali with 34 mm, and Dalhousie with 27 mm.

As a result, flash floods and landslides have been observed in several locations. Rivers in the state began to run above the danger level. Images of the Jalal river as it flows through Sirmaur district show the effects of heavy rain.

Similarly, the Bharmour-Pathankot route near Panjpula has been closed due to a landslip, resulting in a long queue of vehicles waiting for the road to be cleared.

Due to yesterday’s downpour, flash floods have also been recorded in various areas, including the Mandi district.

According to the state’s emergency response centre, at least 138 people have perished in rain-related accidents in Himachal Pradesh since the start of the monsoon on June 24.

Over 500 dwellings were destroyed, with another 5,030 partially destroyed, including 234 stores and 1,500 cowsheds. The state has sustained a $4,986 crore loss.
