ICC has issued an arrest warrant against the President of Russia, Putin

This is the only time that the International Criminal Court has given an arrest warrant against one of the five permanent associates of the UN Security Council, Putin. What is next?

The International Criminal Court (ICC) gave Russian President Vladimir Putin an arrest warrant on March 17 for the warfare crime of unlawfully expelling and moving kids from occupied regions of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.

The crimes were allegedly executed in occupied parts from February 24, 2022. Besides Putin, an arrest warrant was even given to Russia’s Commissioner for Child Rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, a media release on the ICC website stated.

Why has ICC issued an arrest warrant against Putin?

Putin and Belova are totally liable for the war crime of unlawful eviction and transfer of kids from Russian-occupied places of Ukraine to the Russian Federation under reports 8(2)(a)(vii) and 8(2)(b)(viii) of the Rome Statute.

While the ex links to the “illegal deportation or transfer or unlawful detention”, the latter refers to the direct or indirect moving of its civilian population by an occupying force into the occupied area or the deportation or transfer of the people of the occupied part within or beyond its region.

The ICC stated that it has valid grounds to consider that Putin takes individual criminal blame for the crimes of (i) having committed the acts straight, together with others, and through others, under article 25(3)(a) of the Rome Statute (ii) his failure to exert control correctly over civilian & military deputies under his effective authority, committing or permitting the commission of such acts, as per article 28(b) of the Rome Statute.
