IMD Forecasts Above-Normal Heat Wave Days for Gujarat

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts an above-normal number of heat wave days in Gujarat during April and throughout summer 2024, presenting a grim outlook for the region’s weather.

Most Prone Areas to Suffer Gujarat Heat Wave:

According to IMD Director General Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Gujarat, Central Maharashtra, North Karnataka, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh are the most susceptible regions to experience the brunt of heat waves this year.

The forecast attributes the increased frequency of heatwave conditions in Western India to the El Nino phenomenon, which is expected to characterize the weather patterns 2024.

April Gujarat Heat Wave Projections:

While the maximum temperature is forecasted to remain normal in April, the number of heat wave days is anticipated to rise significantly, ranging from 2 to 8 days compared to the usual 1-3 days. Gujarat is predicted to experience a heat wave in the third week of April.

Across India, temperatures are expected to escalate, with maximum temperatures in March ranging from 36-40 degrees Celsius, increasing to 38-42 degrees Celsius in April and peaking at 40-42 degrees Celsius in May.

Heat Action Plans Implemented:

Approximately 200 cities, including Rajkot in Gujarat, have implemented Heat Action Plans (HAPs) to mitigate the impact of heat waves. These plans include measures for reporting mortality and illness related to heat wave incidents.

In light of the anticipated heat wave conditions during the election period, advisories have been issued to the Election Commission of India and state authorities to ensure public safety and minimize exposure to extreme temperatures.
