Imtiaz Ali Says Jab We Met Isn’t a Love Story

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has offered a refreshing perspective on his cult classic film Jab We Met, declaring it’s not a love story at all. In a recent interview, the director emphasized that he doesn’t claim to understand love through his films, but rather explores personal experiences and observations about human connections. From Socha Na Tha to his latest release Main Vaapas Aaunga, Ali has consistently presented romantic narratives through a lens of self-discovery and introspection rather than conventional romance.

Redefining Love Stories Through Cinema

Ali revealed his unique take on Jab We Met, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan: “It was about two people who meet like strangers and they kind of become like each other. They complete each other and realize it later.” The director explained that his early works reflected personal confusion rather than romantic expertise. In Socha Na Tha, he explored internal conflicts where commitments clash with desires, while Main Vaapas Aaunga focuses on how love enables survival through hardship.

Stellar Performances Elevate the Narrative

Ali lavished praise on his lead pair in Main Vaapas Aaunga—Vedang Raina and Sharvari—for their authenticity and earnestness. He highlighted their chemistry, noting they “act with each other” rather than against each other. The director also commended veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah for delivering a powerful performance rooted in imagination and memory, demonstrating how great acting transcends visible action. Through these performances, Ali’s films continue to challenge traditional definitions of love cinema.
