Memes Flood Social Media After India’s Repeated T20I Series Losses

India’s men’s cricket team is struggling to find its footing without former captain Suryakumar Yadav, who was dropped from both the leadership role and the squad months after guiding the side to T20 World Cup glory on home soil in 2026. Under new skipper Shreyas Iyer, India have now lost consecutive T20I series for the first time since early 2019, and social media has responded with a flood of memes mocking the team’s decline.

Iyer’s Difficult Start as Captain

Iyer has led India in six matches so far without recording a single win — five defeats and one match washed out by rain. The setbacks include a complete series sweep by Ireland and an ongoing series loss to England, where India currently trail 0-3 after four games. The contrast with Suryakumar’s tenure has been stark: between 2023 and 2026, he lost only eight of 52 matches as captain and never dropped a bilateral series or tournament.

Selection Calls Add to the Scrutiny

Head coach Gautam Gambhir has described the phase as a rebuilding period for the squad, but fans have been unforgiving online. Much of the criticism has also centred on the decision to bench experienced wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson — the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup — in favour of 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a move that has yet to pay dividends and has divided opinion among supporters.

With the series already lost, India will look for a consolation win in the fifth and final T20I, scheduled for July 11 in Southampton.
