Iyer Calls Loss “Atrocious,” Karthik Finds Reaction Odd

India captain Shreyas Iyer did not hold back after his side suffered a heavy 125-run defeat to England in the third T20 International, calling the performance “atrocious” and insisting that such a loss was simply not acceptable. Chasing a target of 202, India collapsed for just 76 runs in 11.4 overs, recording their biggest defeat by margin in the format’s history. The result also means Iyer is yet to taste victory as India’s T20I captain.

Iyer’s Blunt Assessment

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Iyer did not shy away from criticism, saying the team had no choice but to accept the defeat and return to basics. His comments reflected the mood of a dressing room that had just witnessed one of its most lopsided losses in the shortest format. The defeat also handed England an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series, with two games still to be played, in Bristol and Southampton.

Karthik’s Take on the Captain’s Words

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik weighed in on the fallout, admitting that he found Iyer’s post-match statement somewhat “odd” in tone. However, Karthik was quick to add that the captain’s frustration was completely understandable given the scale of the collapse. He also stressed how crucial Iyer remains to India’s batting lineup, suggesting that despite the harsh assessment, the team management would continue to back him going into the remaining matches of the series.

With the series already decided in England’s favour, India will now be looking to salvage pride in the final two fixtures, while questions around Iyer’s captaincy record in the format are likely to persist.
