India’s Coffee Exports Surge to $1.54 Billion, Up 40% in April-Feb

India’s coffee exports have seen a remarkable 40% growth during the April-February period of the current financial year, surpassing $1.54 billion, compared to $1.10 billion during the same period last year, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce. This surge in overseas shipments reflects a significant rise in global demand for Indian coffee. In February alone, coffee exports increased by 22% to $178.68 million, up from $146.08 million in February 2023.

In rupee terms, the increase is even more impressive, with exports rising by 43.37% to Rs 13,004.75 crore during April-February 2024-25, compared to Rs 9,070 crore in the same period last year. This growth highlights the rising international demand for Indian coffee, driven by the unique flavors and high-quality beans produced in the country.

Italy, Germany, Russia, Belgium, the UAE, and the US are among the top export markets for Indian coffee, underlining its global appeal. India is the seventh-largest coffee producer and the fifth-largest exporter worldwide. The surge in coffee prices, driven by supply disruptions in Brazil and Vietnam due to adverse weather, has also played a role in this growth, as Indian coffee prices have risen to record levels.

Over the past four years, India’s coffee exports have nearly doubled, reaching $1.29 billion in FY 2023-24, up from $719.42 million in 2020-21. This growth reflects the increasing demand for India’s Arabica and Robusta beans, which make up about three-fourths of the country’s production. While the majority of India’s coffee exports are in the form of unroasted beans, there is a growing demand for value-added products like roasted and instant coffee.

India’s coffee is grown in the ecologically rich regions of the Western and Eastern Ghats, with Karnataka leading production, followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu. These regions support shaded plantations that help preserve biodiversity and maintain ecological balance. At the same time, domestic coffee consumption is also on the rise, driven by the growing cafe culture and higher disposable incomes, further boosting the coffee industry’s prospects.
