IPL 2026 Drops Saturday Double-Headers in May: Here’s Why

The IPL 2026 season, which kicked off on March 28, has quietly introduced a notable scheduling change that fans have begun to notice. Since May began, Saturdays now feature just one match instead of the usual two, while Sundays continue to host double-headers as before.

Out of 12 double-headers scheduled across the tournament, eight were held in April across both Saturdays and Sundays. From May onward, all double-headers shifted exclusively to Sundays, leaving Saturdays with a single evening fixture. This pattern is not entirely new — a gradual reduction in Saturday double-headers has been visible since IPL 2024 and has continued through 2025 and now into 2026.

The Heat Factor

One of the most practical reasons behind the change is India’s intense May heat. The first match in a double-header typically begins at 3:30 PM, when afternoon temperatures across most Indian cities are at their peak. These conditions make the experience gruelling for players on the field and uncomfortable for fans watching in stadiums.

Broadcast and Audience Strategy

From a broadcasting perspective, evening matches at 7:30 PM consistently draw larger television and digital audiences. Broadcasters prefer concentrating viewership into one high-profile Saturday night game rather than splitting attention across two fixtures in the same day.

With the IPL’s expanded window now providing sufficient match days, the BCCI no longer needs to squeeze multiple games into every weekend. Teams also benefit from the extra recovery time during the demanding final stretch of the league stage. While no official statement has been issued, the scheduling logic appears built around player welfare, viewer experience, and broadcast performance — a balancing act the IPL seems increasingly comfortable with.
