Irish Grinstead of Girl Group 702 Passes Away at Age 43

Irish Grinstead, a member of the girl group 702, has tragically passed away at the age of 43.

The news was confirmed by her sister and fellow group member, Lemisha Grinstead, who shared the heartbreaking announcement on Instagram.

A Tribute to Irish Grinstead:

In her Instagram post, Lemisha Grinstead wrote, “It is with great sadness that I have to let you know that my beautiful sister and friend has passed away this evening.

She has had a long battle, and she is finally at peace. That girl was as bright as the stars! She was not only beautiful on the outside but also within.

Sharing the stage with her was a joy I will cherish for the rest of my life! We, the family, ask for prayers and respect for our privacy as we grieve an outstanding loss to our family.”

Cause of Death Not Disclosed:

The cause of Irish Grinstead’s death was not disclosed in the announcement.

However, it was previously announced in December that she was taking a “medical leave of absence due to serious medical issues.”

702: The Girl Group:

702 was a girl group consisting of the Grinstead sisters, Irish and Lemisha, along with Kameelah Williams. They derived their name from the area code of their hometown, Las Vegas.

The group made their debut in 1996 with the album “No Doubt,” which featured singles like “Steelo,” serving as the theme song for Nickelodeon’s TV show “Cousin Skeeter.”

Their second album, simply titled “702,” was released in 1999 and included the hit song “Where My Girls At.”

The lineup change:

702 went through lineup changes over the years, including the temporary departure of Kameelah Williams, who was replaced by Cree La’More. However, Williams later rejoined the group.

Their third album, “Star,” featured the single “I Still Love You.”

After a break in 2006, 702 reunited in 2021 for the reality show “BET Presents: The Encore,” which followed nine former girl group members as they attempted to form a supergroup and create an album within 30 days.

Throughout their career, 702 received nominations for various awards, including an American Music Award, a BET Award, and several Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.

They won the award for Best R&B/Soul Album of the Year by a Group, Band, or Duo for “No Doubt.”
