For many people, mornings begin with a steaming cup of tea or coffee. The ritual helps shake off drowsiness and sharpen focus, but the caffeine inside often raises questions about heart health. Is it safe to drink caffeinated beverages first thing in the morning? According to Dr. Anshu Kabra, Additional Director of Cardiology at Narayana Hospital, Jaipur, the answer depends on moderation and individual tolerance.

How Caffeine Affects the Body: Caffeine blocks adenosine, a chemical that promotes relaxation and sleepiness. This increases alertness and can temporarily raise heart rate and blood pressure. While this effect is normal, sensitivity varies widely. Age, genetics, medications, and existing health conditions all influence how strongly someone reacts to caffeine.

Safe Consumption Levels: The American Heart Association notes that up to 400 mg of caffeine per day is generally safe for most adults. However, the amount in a “cup” varies by beverage and serving size. Regular consumers often adapt to caffeine’s effects, but monitoring personal reactions is key.

Potential Health Benefits: Observational studies link moderate coffee intake to a reduced risk of coronary artery disease, stroke, and heart failure. Dr. Kabra emphasizes, however, that coffee should not be treated as medicine. It can complement a healthy lifestyle but cannot replace balanced nutrition and exercise.

Who Needs to Be Cautious: Certain groups should limit caffeine. People with uncontrolled high blood pressure or heart rhythm disorders are more vulnerable to its stimulating effects. Warning signs include palpitations, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, disrupted sleep, or a noticeable spike in blood pressure. These symptoms may mean it’s time to cut back.

Preparation Matters: Coffee itself isn’t inherently harmful, but how you prepare it matters. Adding large amounts of sugar, flavoured syrups, or heavy creamers can turn a simple drink into a less heart‑friendly indulgence. Choosing plain brews or lightly flavoured options helps preserve its health profile.

The Takeaway: For most healthy adults, an early morning cup of tea or coffee is safe when consumed in moderation. The key lies in listening to your body—if caffeine leaves you jittery or disrupts sleep, it may be wise to adjust. Health is never one‑size‑fits‑all, and your personal response to caffeine is the best guide.
