Jadeja is an allrounder, Chahal is a sole bowler. Was it a substitution like that? ‘—-Henriques.

Key points:

  1.  In the first T20I against Australia in Canberra, Chahal stepped in as Jadeja’s concussion replacement.
  2. Chahal was named the man of the match trophy for his performance, to add to the Australians’ frustrations.
  3. The law of the ICC is perfect; sure there should be (concussion) substitution.
  4. In the three-match T20I series, India took a 1-0 lead. On Sunday, the two teams will compete again.

On Friday, Australia’s allrounder Moises Henriques questioned whether a “like for like” concussion replacement for Ravindra Jadeja could be identified as Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

Chahal as Jadeja’s replacement:

In the first T20I against Australia in Canberra, Chahal stepped in as Jadeja’s concussion replacement.

Jadeja was hit in the helmet by Aussie speedster Mitchell Starc during his unbeaten 44-run innings. As India picked up an 11-run win, Chahal spun his web to register figures of 3/25.

Henriques during the virtual press conference:

Chahal was named the man of the match trophy for his performance, to add to the Australians’ frustrations.

Speaking at the digital post-match press conference, Henriques stated the Australian team did not question that Jadeja wanted a concussion replacement from the Indian team.

There was no question that Jadeja had been struck on the head, and a concussion may have occurred. A decision was taken that even a concussion occurred and a replacement was made. We do not doubt this said, Henriques.

But was it a like-for-like substitute? That’s the thing. More of an allrounder, Jadeja was, as well as he had done his batting. Chahal is a (pure) bowler’ continued Henriques.

Henriques on ICC replacement rules:

Moises, however, added that he does not contest the concussion replacement rule of the ICC and also agrees that India has the right to seek a Jadeja replacement.

The law of the ICC is perfect; sure there should be (concussion) substitution. The decision to make a substitution is not what we are talking about. The only thing we’re suggesting is that a like-for-like substitute should be available.

That, I suppose, is the way to go ahead,’ added Henriques. I don’t know how the (replacement) decision was made; I’m not interested in that stuff. Doctors are there to do that, and it isn’t our job to make those choices,’ he added.

In the three-match T20I series, India took a 1-0 lead. On Sunday, the two teams will compete again.
