Yashasvi Jaiswal Eyes Historic Test Milestone, Could Surpass Dravid and Sehwag
Young Indian batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the verge of achieving a major milestone in Test cricket, one that could see him eclipse the legendary Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. The 22-year-old southpaw, known for his fearless stroke play and solid technique, is just 202 runs away from becoming the fastest Indian to reach 2000 Test runs.
Jaiswal has so far amassed 1798 runs in 36 innings across 19 Test matches at an impressive average of 52.88. His record already includes four centuries and ten half-centuries, making him one of the most consistent performers in the Indian Test setup since his debut in 2023.
If he manages to get to the 2000-run mark within his next three innings during the upcoming Test series in England, Jaiswal will surpass the record jointly held by Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, who both reached the landmark in 40 innings. Jaiswal has three innings left to achieve this feat in 39 innings or fewer, placing him on the cusp of a historic record.
However, the challenge ahead is a tough one. Jaiswal will be opening the innings in England — a place known for its swinging conditions and testing pitches. The Dukes ball, overcast skies, and green-topped wickets have historically challenged even the best batters in world cricket.
Jaiswal’s form in the lead-up to the Test series has been mixed. In four innings against the England Lions in warm-up games, he managed just one half-century, raising concerns about his readiness for the main event. Despite this, his overseas credentials remain strong. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Jaiswal was India’s second-highest run-scorer, compiling 391 runs in 10 innings at an average of 43.44. His contributions included one century and two fifties, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure in foreign conditions.
As India gears up for the crucial five-Test series in England, all eyes will be on the opening duo of Jaiswal and KL Rahul. Rahul, a seasoned campaigner, has found form with a century against the England Lions and a half-century in the intra-squad match. His experience could prove vital in guiding Jaiswal through the initial overs and setting the tone at the top.
If Jaiswal can overcome the early challenges and settle into a rhythm, history could well be within his grasp. Achieving the 2000-run milestone faster than two of India’s all-time greats would not only solidify his place in the team but also mark the arrival of a new batting force in Indian cricket.
