Jeremy Hunt says the economy of the UK is back

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt tells Britain’s economy is “back” and that his development plan has been welcomed at the International Monetary Fund conference in Washington.

His predecessor, Kwasi Kwarteng, left the last IMF conference in October early amid a storm of criticism.

Mr Jeremy Hunt said the global lending body noticed he was “putting the British economy back on the correct track”. Yet, the latest figures show the UK economy failed to rise in February.

On Wednesday, the IMF predicted the UK economy to shrink by 0.3% in 2023, making it one of the worst-performing of the world’s significant economies.

When questioned whether the UK’s recent performance undermined his upbeat message, Mr Hunt stated: “It’s other finance ministers who are saying that Britain is back.”

Britain’s economy had just healed to its size before the pandemic, following months of industrial action, rapidly increasing prices and labour shortages.

On Friday, nurses in the RCN union denied the 5% pay rise proposal and said they scheduled to strike again at the beginning of May. Meanwhile, NHS junior physicians in England are now staging a four-day walkout over wages, ending at 07:00 on Saturday.

The current wave of industrial action involving the UK has contributed to its lack of development, the Office of National Statistics stated this week.
