Kaantha Box Office Collection Hits ₹13 Crore in First Weekend

Selvamani Selvaraj’s retro drama Kaantha, featuring Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashri Borse, Samuthirakani, and Rana Daggubati, delivered mixed results during its first weekend after hitting theatres on Friday. The film accumulated ₹13.22 crore in net domestic collections, marking a decline from its opening day performance. Mixed critical reception in Tamil and Telugu-speaking regions contributed to the downward trajectory throughout the weekend period.

Opening Day Performance and Saturday Rise

The film began its theatrical run with ₹4.35 crore in India and ₹10.50 crore worldwide on its opening day. However, Saturday witnessed an uptick in collections, bringing in ₹5 crore domestically and ₹16 crore globally. This surge demonstrated initial audience interest despite critical reservations about the film’s narrative and execution.

Sunday Collections and Market Response

Sunday proved challenging for Kaantha as it collected an estimated ₹3.87 crore in net sales across India, representing a significant 26.49% drop in Tamil occupancy and 17.16% in Telugu regions. The declining trend suggests that negative word-of-mouth reviews hampered sustained box office performance during the crucial opening weekend.

Kaantha is set in 1950s Madras and follows superstar TK Mahadevan (Dulquer) filming a horror movie called Saantha opposite filmmaker Ayya (Samuthirakani). The plot centers on an ego clash between the two leads with grave consequences for a loved one. The film showcases Dulquer’s career-best performance and marks a strong collaborative effort from producers Dulquer and Rana Daggubati under Wayfarer Films and Spirit Media, though market reception remained lukewarm.
