The vice-presidential nominee for the upcoming US
Presidential Elections Kamala Harris recalls her walks in Chennai and her love
for Idli.
During her first-ever address
to the Indian-American community, as a Democratic vice-presidential nominee,
Senator Kamala Harris reflected on her proud Indian heritage and
recollected her fonder memories of the country.

The 55-year old is the first African-American, Indian-American vice-presidential nominee of a major party. She took a trip down the memory lane, and also recalled how her mother always wanted to instil in her a “love for good idli”. Harris remembered her grandfather, with whom she would go for long walks in Chennai, told her about the heroes responsible for the creation of the world’s largest democracy. Harris would be second in the line of succession after US Presidential nominee Joe Biden and is the Senator of California. Kamala is the daughter of a Jamaican father and Indian mother.

Kamala Harris sends her wishes on India’s 74th Independence Day:
In her address organized by Indians for
Biden National Council on
the 15th of August, Harris said,” On 15th August, 2020, I stand before you as
the first candidate for vice president of the United States of South Asian
descent. To the people of India and Indian Americans all across the US, I want
to wish you a happy Indian Independence Day.” In the virtual inaugural meet of the council,
Harris said that on August 15, 1947, men and women all over India celebrated
the declaration of the Independence of their nation. Harris’ mother, Shyamala
Gopalan migrated to the US from Tamil Nadu, and Donald J Harris, her father
moved to the US from Jamaica. Kamala explained the deep influence of the Indian
heritage on her and said that Indians are bound together by so much more than
the history and culture they share.
