A senior official said that at least a dozen people have gone missing after three stores were washed away in the Mandakini river due to a landslide near Gaurikund on the Kedarnath yatra route in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. The incident occurred on the intervening nights of Thursday and Friday at Daat Puliya.

DDMO officer on Kedarnath landslide:

“At least a dozen people are feared missing after three shops were washed away in the river due to a landslip near Gauri Kund,” Chamoli District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO) Nandan Singh Rajwar said, adding that those missing are thought to be traders rather than pilgrims.

Rescue and search activities are being carried out by personnel from the NDRF, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the police department, and the district administration.

List of people missing in a landslide:

The Rudraprayag district administration has issued a list of missing people, which includes a Nepali family of seven. Ashu (23), Priyanshu Chamoli (18), Ranbir Singh (28), Vinod (26), Mulayam (26), and seven Nepali family members – Amar Bohra (29), wife Anita Bohra (26), and their five minor children – have been identified.

Due to continued rainfall and stone falls, SDRF authorities said they had to temporarily cease the rescue and search effort.

Yellow alert issued by IMD:

“On Friday morning, we restarted the operation to search for the missing persons,” SDRF media in-charge Lalita Negi said, adding that one team was also conducting a search operation at Kund Barrage, 2 kilometres downstream from the landslip location.

For the next four days, the IMD in Dehradun has issued a yellow alert for all 13 districts in Uttarakhand.

Due to the threat of rain-related incidents, the number of pilgrims travelling to the Kedarnath shrine has significantly decreased.
