Kyrgios sends a volley of comments to Wilander regarding Murray.

On Monday, seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander came under fire from Nick Kyrgios after the Swede indicated that Andy Murray considers whether, at the cost of talented young players, he has the right to accept wild cards for majors.

Swede Wilander’s remarks came after the first-round loss of three-time Grand Slam champion Murray by Stan Wawrinka at the French Open on Sunday, in which he only won six games.

It was Murray’s former world number one joint-worst defeat at a Grand Slam and came after even a three-year absence on his return to the French Open, during which he had two hip surgeries.

I keep getting a little frustrated, is it his right to do that out there? It was the biggest mistake I’ve made in my career, I did it, and I shouldn’t have it,’ Wilander told Eurosport.

I think that Murray must stop worrying about himself and begin to think about who he was. Will he have a right to be out there taking the young players’ wild cards? Australian Kyrgios, who, due to the coronavirus pandemic, missed the French Open, quickly leapt to the defence of a 33-year-old British Twitter player.

Just read about @andy Murray what Wilander said … Shut up Mats, it doesn’t matter to anyone. Muzz, just know that no matter how long you visit, we all love your tennis and banter and enjoy it.

“Also, I never saw Mats Wilander’s argument.”

Last year, Murray returned to singles action and won the Antwerp title where he beat Wawrinka, a result that boosted expectations that he could compete at the top again.

The three-time Grand Slam champion, however, looked at himself on Sunday with a pale shadow and admitted after the match that he would have a good hard time thinking about his game.

“For sure, it’s difficult to leave. It’s just not right to give all of us hope by playing, “Wilander said. “The fact that he’s back and trying, I love it.

“I hope he figures out why he’s doing it.”

Alex Corretja, Wilander’s Eurosport colleague, a former Murray mentor, said he appreciated the opinion of Wilander but said Murray needs to be given a chance to enjoy the rest of his career.

Instead of one year too early, my advice is to retire one year too late, “Spaniard Corretja said.” “I assume that he’ll feel much better once the indoor season starts.”
