Li Qiang is nominated as the next premier on Saturday by the China’s President Xi Jinping.

During the annual meeting of China’s rubber-stamp parliament, China’s president Xi Jinping nominated Li Qiang to become the next premier on Saturday.

Li, the former Communist Party head of Shanghai, is the largest city in China. LI will replace Li Keqiang after serving two five-year terms; Li Keqiang is going to retire during the National People’s Congress session, which will end on Monday.

A close associate of Xi, Li Qiang served as his chief of staff from 2004 to 2007 while Xi was the Zhejiang province’s provincial party secretary.

When he was chosen to serve as the second member of the Politburo Standing Committee during the once every-five years Communist Party Congress, he put himself on the path to becoming premier.

As a generation of more reform-minded government officials retires, and Xi further consolidates control after being elected president for an unprecedented third term on Friday, he is placing a slate of loyalists in key positions amid the largest government change in a decade.
