Police said they were notified regarding the assault at 4 am on Thursday and saw Pravin Lahane injured on the ground when a unit ran to the scene. Police said they learnt a group of guys attacked him after misunderstanding him for a robber.

Lahane subsequently fell unconscious at Kasturba Marg Police Station and was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Police said Lahane was intoxicated when he entered an abandoned building. “CCTV video from the area shows him jumping across a boundary fence, due to which the people there might have misunderstood him for a thief and beat him,” said an official who did not want to be named.
