Man drank urine and ate insects to survive in Amazon

Bolivian man states it helped that he learned survival tactics after becoming separated from his group on a hunting trip in Amazon in January.

A Bolivian man supposed to have been missing in the Amazon alone for a month has recalled consuming insects and worms, collecting water in his boots and sipping his urine to stay alive.

If confirmed, this could create Jhonatan Acosta, 30, one of the longest-ever alone Amazon survivors.

Amazon survivor eats insects and worms after getting lost:

“It helped a lot to learn about survival plans: I had to eat insects, drink my urine, consume worms,” he told Unitel TV on Tuesday. “Animals bashed me.”

Acosta was declared missing by his family at the end of January. He had been on a hunting tour with four friends in the Amazon rainforest but became isolated from his group on 25 January.

Precisely a month after, he was seen by search and rescue units last Saturday.

Acosta spoke to Unitel; it showered half the time he was lost. He used his rubber boots to accumulate whatever rainwater he could. But when the skies dried up, he had to consume his urine.

“I requested God for rain,” Acosta said. “If it hadn’t showered, I would not have survived.”

Disoriented, Acosta said he had roamed approximately 40km (25 miles) searching for civilisation but soon found he was going around in circles. He was stated to have lost 17kg and dislocated his ankle during his ordeal.
