McLaren is just not interested in manufacturing SUVs.

Key sentence:

  1. Since the car manufacturer is determined to do what it does best – make awe-inspiring supercars.
  2. The ‘no’ answer is a perfectly logical one. Our brand is entirely grounded in motorsport, supercars, as well as cars for drivers.
  3. Flewitt says that in the times ahead, the priority is also on electric cars and it may be earlier than one may assume.

McLaren is in no hurry to go big to go strong at a time when many conventional sports and performance car makers have chosen to bring out SUVs in what is a breakaway from traditions.

Since the car manufacturer is determined to do what it does best – make awe-inspiring supercars, there are no plans or prospects for a McLaren SUV at all.

McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt is a Magazine Interview:

McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt recently revealed in a magazine interview that he is frequently asked whether and when his company will produce a Sports Utility Vehicle. “We have remained faithful to the concept of producing supercars.

That may be a question I get into those markets: ‘Are you guys going to do an SUV?’, or ‘Are you people going to do an EV?’ The response is no; we’re not,”.

The ‘no’ answer is a perfectly logical one.

Our brand is entirely grounded in motorsport, supercars, as well as cars for drivers. It’s way too early to expand the brand into other fields and attempt to offer a brand reputation to a brand with little to do with our past.

How, though, is McLaren looking to keep up with a changing global automotive sector? Why, of course, hybrids.

Further Flewitt stated in an interview:

Flewitt says that in the times ahead, the priority is also on electric cars and it may be earlier than one may assume. “After 2022-23 I can’t see us introducing some non-hybrid cars,” he stated. “I’m frank enough to say we only hybridize cars to satisfy environmental legislation to stay consistent.”

Flewitt about their competitor in an interview:

And while hybrid and EVs might still be the way forward, several McLaren rivals have either already started or are allegedly working on introducing the technology to larger vehicles not yet produced by them. Take Ferrari’s example, for instance. The business is now focusing on Purosangue, vehemently towards making SUVs.

In many markets, including India, Lamborghini has always had the Urus SUV. And although these cars aren’t hybrid or electric – not yet, they underline a solid change from the low-slung sports and performance cars that these car manufacturers have historically identified.
