Mocha will become a very severe cyclonic storm; says IMD

The Indian Meteorological Department predicts that the severe cyclonic storm ‘Mocha’ will intensify into a very strong cyclonic storm on Friday as it travels across the Bangladesh-Myanmar coast.

“The SCS “Mocha” lay centred at 0230 hours IST on May 12th, 2023 over Southeast adjoining Central Bay of Bengal around 520 km west-northwest of Port Blair,” the IMD tweeted early Friday.

Yemen recommended the name ‘Mocha’ for the storm, named for the Red Sea port city credited with raising coffee to the world.

The following are the top five updates on the upcoming strong cyclonic storm.

1. The IMD tweeted on Thursday night, “Severe cyclonic storm “Mocha” lay centred at 2330 hrs IST of May 11th 2023 over southeast connecting Central BoB near lat 12.7N, long 88.1E, about 510 km west-northwest of Port Blair, 1050 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and 970 km south-southwest of Sittwe (Myanmar).”

2. Due to climatic conditions, the northeastern regions of Tripura and Mizoram are expected to get significant rains beginning Saturday. On the other hand, rain is forecast in Nagaland, Manipur, and south Assam on Sunday.

3. The National Disaster Relief Force has sent out eight teams while 200 rescuers have been placed on the ground, and 100 rescuers are on standby.

4. The IMD has requested that fishermen, ships, boats, and trawlers refrain from entering the central and northeast Bay of Bengal, as well as the north Andaman Sea, until Sunday. Those sailing in the central Bay of Bengal, as well as the north Andaman Sea, are advised to return to the coast.

5. The Indian Coast Guard also warned fishermen on Wednesday, telling them not to enter the sea. “In routine air surveillance sorties around low-pressure areas of the #AndamanSea, @IndiaCoastGuard is issuing safety alerts.” Fishermen are being shepherded/advised not to venture into the sea and to return ashore, according to the Indian Coast Guard.
