South African Jurist of Indian origin recognized for advancing global justice.

Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, an eminent South African jurist of Indian‑Tamil heritage, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2026 for her lifelong dedication to strengthening international law and promoting peace. At 85, Pillay continues to serve as a judge at the International Court of Justice, where she has played a pivotal role in shaping global legal frameworks.

A Trailblazer in Law and Justice

Born in 1941 in Durban, South Africa, Pillay grew up in modest circumstances. Her grandparents had migrated from India as indentured labourers in the late 19th century, and her father worked as a bus driver. Despite apartheid’s challenges, she became the first non‑white woman to establish a law practice in South Africa’s Natal Province in 1967 and later the first non‑white woman judge of the High Court of South Africa.

Her career gained international prominence when she was elected to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she served for eight years, including four as president. Under her leadership, the tribunal delivered landmark rulings on genocide and crimes against humanity. Pillay later served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, championing accountability and justice in conflict zones worldwide.

Nobel Committee’s Recognition

Announcing the award, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, praised Pillay’s “extraordinary contribution to a more comprehensive global legal order.” He emphasized that her work underscores the importance of resolving conflicts through law rather than violence.

The committee highlighted her career as a reminder that “an international legal system in which war criminals are held to account, and victims of abuse see justice served is a precondition for a peaceful world.”

Legacy of Hope

Pillay’s recognition comes during the 125th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize, a year marked by rising global conflicts and challenges to international institutions. Her journey from apartheid-era South Africa to the world’s highest judicial platforms embodies resilience and a commitment to justice.

By honouring Pillay, the Nobel Committee has reinforced the enduring value of international law as a cornerstone of peace. Her life’s work continues to inspire advocates and institutions striving to uphold human rights and ensure accountability in times of turmoil.
