With the uncertain future of the cinemas, producers
of many films decide to release their films directly on streaming giant Netflix
India, to not incur losses.
On Thursday, streaming giant Netflix announced the release of 17 movies and shows
in the next few months. After rivals Disney+Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, and
others announced several films’ release on their platforms, Netflix India has
announced green lighting 17 movies and shows. After four months since shutting
of the cinemas, producers have had to look out for options so that their films
can get a proper release, can reach its audience, and try to recover the huge
losses that occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The only source of entertainment in the country
during those four months was Over The Top (OTT) platforms. OTT platforms
emerged as a favorite choice for both the producers and the viewers to keep
consuming the Indian Cinema and shows.
17 movies and shows to stream
on Netflix:
Netflix India has signed off 17 projects to be released on its streaming platform, with some of the highly anticipated films like Abhishek Bachchan-Rajkummar Rao starrer Ludo, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, Bombay Rose & Jhanvi Kapoor’s Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, along with the release of Mira Nair’s next titled ‘A Suitable Boy’ which stars Tabu and Ishaan and is based on Vikram Seth’s novel.
Netflix India aiming for
diverse genre films:
Monika Shergill, VP-Content of
Netflix India stated that the new crop of films and shows are of different
genres and said,” Gunjan Saxena is different from Raat Akeli Hai, which is a
thriller. There are interesting releases such as Masaba Masaba, AK Vs AK, and
Tribhanga – Tedhi Medi Crazy that features Kajol. It is going to be a packed
calendar for us as these Indian titles are scheduled to release along with our
international ones(films).”
