Nissan announces to go all-electric in the next 7 years

Nissan will execute plans towards electrification by committing that all cars sold in Europe will be environmentally friendly by 2030.

The report comes despite the UK delaying its 2030 ban on selling new petrol and diesel automobiles to 2035.

Nissan’s chief said the company’s move was “the right thing to do.” Car trade body the SMMT has expressed concerns that the delay of the ban would see customers postpone the change to electric cars.

Nissan will even introduce new battery technology by the end of the decade that it said will lessen both the charging time and cost of electric vehicles (EVs).

“Nissan will make the switch to full electric by 2030 in Europe. We believe it is the right thing to do for our business, our customers, and the planet,” stated Nissan’s chief executive, Makoto Uchida.

Battery factory

Nissan is the only auto company with battery manufacturing ability in the UK.

Last year, it revealed plans to fund £1bn in expanding the facility next to its Sunderland car factory. The government gave £100m towards the project.

That gives Nissan an advantage over other manufacturers importing most of their batteries from China.

Post-Brexit trading regulations due to take effect in January next year need motorcars made in the UK or EU to source 45% of their components by value from the UK or EU to avoid a 10% tax when shipped either way.
