PM Modi Celebrates India’s Historic Women’s Cricket World Cup Win

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the Indian women’s cricket team at his official residence in New Delhi on Wednesday to celebrate their historic triumph. Led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the team clinched India’s first major ICC trophy by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the Women’s World Cup final at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium. The achievement marks a momentous victory for the squad, which faced three early defeats and intense social media criticism during the tournament.

Amanjot’s Match-Winning Catch

During the meeting, PM Modi highlighted Amanjot Kaur’s dramatic boundary catch of Nadine de Klerk in the final. The crucial dismissal shifted momentum decisively in India’s favor. With characteristic humor, Modi recalled the moment and advised: “While taking the catch, keep your eyes on the ball. After the catch, your eyes must be on the trophy.”

A Full Circle Moment for the Team

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur shared an emotional reflection, recalling the team’s previous meeting with Modi in 2017 following their ODI World Cup final loss. “This time, the team arrived as champions,” she expressed, hoping to return with even more trophies in the future. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana emphasized how Modi’s earlier encouragement had sustained the team through years of heartbreak and repeated World Cup setbacks.

The Prime Minister urged the players to promote the Fit India movement among young girls, addressing growing concerns about childhood obesity. The meeting concluded with celebrations and shared pride in the long-awaited victory, symbolizing the resilience and determination that defined India’s World Cup campaign.
