India announced on Friday that PM Narendra Modi would pay a state visit to the United States from June 20 to June 24, where President Joe Biden will receive him at the White House and address a joint Congress session.
According to the external affairs ministry, Modi will fly from the United States to Egypt on June 24-25 to visit President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and strengthen bilateral trade and strategic cooperation. Modi’s trip to Egypt will be his first.
Modi’s visit to the United States is considered a high point in India’s bilateral engagement calendar ahead of the G20 Summit in September, for which Biden is anticipated to fly to New Delhi. Several significant agreements, including one for India’s planned acquisition of 31 weaponized drones and another on greater collaboration on semiconductors, are anticipated to be announced during the visit to the US.
At the request of Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, Modi’s state visit to the United States will begin in New York on June 21, when he will lead celebrations celebrating International Day of Yoga at the United Nations headquarters. In December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.
Modi will then go to Washington, where he will be greeted with a ceremonial welcome at the White House on June 22. As per the foreign ministry, he will meet with Biden to continue their high-level communication.
The same evening, Biden and the First Lady will hold a state banquet celebrating Modi.
PM Narendra Modi will attend a joint session of the United States Congress on June 22 at the invitation of Congressional leaders, including House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Senate Speaker Charles Schumer. Addresses to joint sessions of Congress are typically reserved for the United States’s closest allies or foreign leaders. Modi gave his last such speech in 2016.
Modi will be greeted by Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Bilnken at a luncheon on June 23.
In addition to official engagements, Modi will have several carefully planned encounters with CEOs, professionals, and other stakeholders. According to the external affairs ministry, he will also meet with members of the Indian diaspora.
Modi will then fly to Cairo for a state visit at the invitation of Egyptian President Sisi. The offer was issued to the prime minister in January when Sisi was the special guest at the Republic Day celebrations.
Apart from meeting with Sisi, Modi is expected to meet with senior Egyptian government officials, renowned Egyptian personalities, and members of the Indian community.
According to the external affairs ministry, India-Egypt relations are founded on old commercial and economic links and cultural and people-to-people contacts. The two countries decided to raise their relationship to a strategic alliance during Sisi’s state visit in January.
