In a historic move, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VSNGU) in Surat is set to award its first-ever posthumous Ph.D. degree to late assistant professor Mohitkumar Patel. Tragically he is passed away due to a brain stroke in 2020 at the age of 38.
Sons to Accept Degree at Convocation Ceremony:
Mohitkumar’s legacy will be honored at the university’s 55th convocation ceremony, where his two sons, Tathya and Tirth, aged 12 and 13 respectively, will accept the degree on his behalf.
This symbolic gesture acknowledges Mohitkumar’s dedication to academia and unfinished scholarly pursuits.
University Registrar Confirms Unprecedented Decision:
VSNGU Registrar R C Gadhvi affirmed the historical significance of this decision. Noting that it marks the first instance of the university awarding a posthumous degree.
The gesture reflects the university’s commitment to recognizing academic excellence and honoring the aspirations of its scholars, even in the face of adversity.
Mohitkumar Patel’s Academic Journey:
As an assistant professor at Sheth C D Barfiwala College of Commerce in Surat, Mohitkumar researched comparative analyses of financial performance.
Despite successfully submitting his thesis, his untimely demise on September 25, 2020, due to a brain stroke, left his viva pending.
Family’s Plea and Gujarat University Response:
Moved by Mohitkumar’s unfulfilled academic aspirations, his family approached VSNGU Vice Chancellor Dr. K N Chavda, urging the university to confer the degree posthumously.
Their heartfelt plea, supported by an official application, resonated with university authorities, leading to a unanimous decision by the Syndicate meeting and Academic Council to grant the posthumous Ph.D. degree.
Fulfillment of a Brother’s Wish:
Expressing gratitude for the university’s compassionate response, Mohitkumar’s brother, Rahul Patel, emphasized his late brother’s lifelong dream of attaining a Ph.D. degree.
Despite his passing, Mohitkumar’s dedication and hard work will be commemorated through this honorable distinction, bringing closure to his family and ensuring his academic legacy endures.
