Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s Akasa Air signed a contract with Boeing on Tuesday for 72 fuel-efficient 737 MAX aircraft. India’s new carrier’s nearly $9 billion order includes high-capacity 737-8 and 737-8-200 aircraft.

Akasa Air CEO Vinay Dube said at the 2021 Dubai Air Show, “We are delight to be working with Boeing on our first aircraft order and thank them for their trust in Akasa Air’s business plan and leadership team. We believe the new 737 MAX aircraft support our goal to run a profitable. Reliable, and affordable airline and a green company with the youngest also greenest fleet in the Indian skies.

Dube added, “India is one of the best fastest-growing aviation markets in the world with unprecedented potential. We have had a strong recovery in aviation, and we see growth in the decades ahead.”

Dube said, “Akasa Air’s primary goal is to drive India’s engine of growth also democratize air travel by creating an comprehensive environment for all Indians regardless from their socioeconomic or cultural background.

Akasa Air, backed by stock market investor Rakesh Junjunwala, is a very low-cost carrier.

In a statement, the airline said: “The 737 MAX will give Akasa Air a competitive advantage in a dynamic domestic market by offering the lowest cost per seat mile for single-lane aircraft. As well as high delivery reliability and an enhanced passenger experience.”

He added: “With its optimized performance, flexibility, and capabilities. The 737 MAX is the perfect aircraft to bring Akasa Air to the Indian market and ensure the efficient expansion of its network.

Due to the company, the 737 MAX family offers superior efficiency, flexibility, and reliability. While reducing fuel consumption also CO2 emissions by at least 14% compared to the aircraft it replaces. Akasa Air hopes to new commercial flights in the summer of 2022. The airline received a clearance certificate from the Ministry of Civil Aviation in mid-October and is currently obtaining additional permits.
