On Sunday, film director Ram Gopal Varma turned to Twitter to support The Kerala Story. He questioned the “death-like silence of Bollywood” on the film’s success.

In his most recent tweets, he referred to the film as a “ghostly mirror” that reveals the “dead face of mainstream Bollywood.”

Since its trailer release, the Sudipto Sen-directed film has sparked debate, claiming that around 32000 Kerala ladies were forced to convert to Islam and were recruited by ISIS. However, the figure was eventually dropped from the caravan.

Ram Gopal Varma commented, “The #KeralaStory is like a beautiful ghostly mirror showing the dead face of mainstream Bollywood to itself in all its ugliness.”

“It’s difficult to learn from #KeralaStory because it’s easy to copy a lie but very difficult to copy truth,” he continued in the following post.

In a second post, he said, “The #KeralaStory will haunt like a mysterious fog in every story talk room and every corporate house in Bollywood forever.”

“We are so comfortable in telling lies to both others and also ourselves that when someone goes ahead and shows the truth, we get shocked… That clarifies the death-like silence of Bollywood on the shattering success of #KeralaStory,” he concluded.

RGV is not the only one who has spoken out in the film’s favour. Several prominent celebrities have previously criticized those who have called for a ban on The Kerala Story.

Among them was legendary performer Shabana Azmi, who stated that people who want to ban The Kerala Story are “as wrong” as those who want to ban Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha. Kangana Ranaut had agreed with her.

In a recent interview, actor Manu Rishi Chadha stated to our source that art should never be suppressed. “I’m discussing it,” he remarked. Those that are not that is their choice.

Those who are silent today do not guarantee that they will not speak up tomorrow. Because if the definition of ban broadens, the entire industry will speak out, from the cameraman to the film editor. I assure you that those who have been silent will speak out against it tomorrow.”
