Ravi Shastri Honored with Permanent Stand at Iconic Wankhede Stadium

Indian cricket legend Ravi Shastri has come full circle at the Wankhede Stadium. The former India captain, head coach, and veteran commentator recently shared his emotional journey as the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officially named a stand after him. For Shastri, the honor is more than a plaque; it is a homecoming to the very ground where his cricketing dreams were ignited over five decades ago.

From the North Stand to History

Shastri’s connection with Wankhede began in 1974. As a 12-year-old boy, he would take buses and trains to sit in the North Stand, absorbing the game alongside the “most knowledgeable crowd in the country.” It was on this hallowed turf that he etched his name into the record books, most notably hitting six sixes in an over during a Ranji Trophy match against Baroda. While Shastri often points to his gritty Test hundreds, he humorously notes that fans—from Mumbai to Jamaica—primarily remember those six towering hits that defined his aggressive flair.

A Legacy of Grit and “Hai-Hai”

The journey wasn’t always smooth. Shastri recalled a period when he was frequently booed by the local crowd, an experience so intense his father, a doctor, stopped attending matches. However, Shastri views this as a vital lesson in “Indian publicity,” noting that the same crowd eventually gave him standing ovations once they recognized his “tougher than nails” spirit. He emphasized that the Wankhede crowd’s deep understanding of the game is what makes this recognition so special, as they value the “sweat and blood” behind every run.

Today, as he prepares to conduct tosses and provide commentary, the stand serves as a permanent reminder of a career built on merit, without shortcuts or “chamchagiri.”
