After being ignored by selectors for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final last month, veteran Indian spinner R Ashwin demonstrated his class in the series opener against the West Indies on Wednesday.

On Day 1 of the first Test at Windsor Park, the senior all-rounder broke many records with a match-changing five-wicket haul. While Ashwin was on fire with the ball, his Rajasthan Royals (RR) teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal successfully auditioned for the opener’s role in the first Test of the series.

After an outstanding domestic season, Jaiswal won his first call-up for the ongoing West Indies series in the third edition of the WTC.

Jaiswal, who had previously been confirmed to begin India’s innings, made an amazing debut on Day 1 at Dominica with a stroke-filled effort.

Jaiswal led the way for Rohit Sharma’s Team India on the first day, and the Indian southpaw received a special mention from all-rounder Ashwin at Stumps.

Ashwin talks about Yashasvi Jaiswal:

“Jaiswal is a vibrant and talented cricketer.” I wish him the best of luck in his profession. “I think we’re going to see some special performances from him,” Ashwin told the official broadcaster of the Test series between India and the West Indies.

On Day 1 of the first Test, Jaiswal hammered 40 off 73 balls while the Indian captain stayed undefeated on 30 off 65 balls. Unbeaten batting from Rohit and Jaiswal powered India to 80/0 in just 23 overs.

A new record by R Ashwin:

Following his performance against the West Indies on Day 1, spin wizard Ashwin pondered on his performance. The 36-year-old became the first Indian and only the sixth player in Test cricket history to dismiss a father and son.

In addition, the senior all-rounder became only the third Indian bowler to reach 700 wickets in international cricket. In addition to surpassing Anil Kumble’s record, Ashwin became the Indian bowler with the most bowled dismissals in Test cricket.

“I thought it was a good performance.” There was some dampness on the pitch earlier, but it began to spin later. I noticed on TV that it had become later. Early adaptation was required.

It was a little dry, so we needed to pick up the speed to challenge the batters. Adapting to diverse environments is essential in international cricket. We may get carried away with a few league performances with so many leagues, but international cricket is different,” Ashwin explained.
