A Russian Sukhoi-34 fighter plane has accidentally bombs the Russian city of Belgorod, about 40km (25 miles) from the border with Ukraine.

The bomb left a 20m (60ft) hole and forced a blast so large it blew a car onto the top of a nearby store.

Russian jet accidentally bombs city near Ukraine:

Provincial governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said authorities had requested the evacuation of a damaged nine-floor block of apartments as a precaution.

Three people were wounded, and some buildings were damaged, he stated.

A video shared on social media showed the result of the blast, raising a car onto the top of a supermarket as traffic flowed along Prospekt Vatutina, near the city’s centre.

In a brief report, the Russian defence ministry acknowledged that one of its Su-34 fighter bombers had “accidentally released aircraft ordnance” on Thursday at 22:15 local time (19:15 GMT).

It was a bureaucratic form of saying that the plane had incorrectly fired a weapon. It ought to specify which one. The bomb came at a junction of two roads around the city centre and next to residential structures.

According to the governor, two females were treated at the clinic. But the results could have been far worse with a Russian bomber shooting a busy residential road.

“Thank God no one was killed,” he wrote on social media.

CCTV video of the incident indicates that citizens clearly had a lucky escape. The footage shows a series of vehicles passing a crossroads before the bomb lands on the ground around.

There is no immediate blast. The ordnance detonates about 18 seconds after, blowing up a section of the district, catching one of the vehicles as it passes and sending a parked vehicle flying into the air before it lands on the supermarket top.
