Nagpur Heavy Rain: Four people were killed, and several houses were destroyed when torrential rain in the early hours of Saturday caused havoc in Nagpur and its surrounding districts, producing a flood-like situation.
Those living along the Nag and Pili rivers and the Ambazari Lake have been hit the worst.
According to officials, one woman, Meera Pilley, died at Ehbab Colony, while the body of another unidentified woman washed away near Surendragarh in south Nagpur.
Necessary action on Nagpur heavy rain:
According to persons familiar with the situation, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who represents Nagpur South-West assembly constituency, has asked the collector, municipal commissioner, and city police commissioner to deploy numerous teams to rescue stranded citizens.
The Ambazari Lake expanded due to the heavy downpour, causing water to overflow onto a neighboring road.
According to Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials, a retaining wall near a hospital collapsed, directing floodwaters to residential areas such as Shankar Nagar, Corporation Colony, and Daga Layout.
Residents in Shankar Nagar were forced to jump onto rooftops to escape the rising water level, which reached five feet in minutes.
District collector declared a school holiday:
The Gorewada Lake’s water level surged to 315.68 meters (the gate opening level is 315.45 meters), causing an overflow into the Pili River.
As a result, several homes in north Nagpur were inundated, according to former corporator Manoj Sangole.
Municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari told reporters that teams from the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force rescued 40 pupils from a school for the hearing and speech-impaired and evacuated 140 households to safer sites.
As a preventive step, district collector Vipin Itankar declared a school holiday.
Numerous highways and residential areas have been swamped, and waterlogging at the Mor Bhavan city bus stop has caused the Aapli Bus service to be disrupted.
Residents to stay indoors:
According to Fadnavis’ office, two Indian Army troops are going to Ambazari. Fadnavis also urged the people not to propagate rumors and recommended residents to stay indoors unless essential.
The rescue activities were observed by the state BJP president and MLC Chandrashekhar Bawankule, divisional commissioner Vijayalaxmi Bidari, Chaudhari, and Itankar.
