Gill’s Record 206 Powers India Past West Indies

India captain Shubman Gill delivered a historic performance on Wednesday, September 30, scoring 206 in the second ODI against West Indies at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. The 27-year-old’s second career Shubman Gill double century helped India chase down a target of 407 with ease and clinch the series.

A Chase for the Ages

Gill shared a commanding 255-run partnership with former captain Rohit Sharma, who contributed 101. Together they dismantled the West Indies attack and took India to the second-highest successful run-chase in ODI history. Gill raced to his century in just 62 balls and reached the double ton in only 117 deliveries, a remarkable display of controlled aggression that left the visiting bowlers with no answers.

Records Tumble for the India Captain

The innings rewrote several record books. Gill’s double century is the fastest in ODI history by balls faced, and his hundred was the quickest ever by an Indian captain. He also crossed 2,000 ODI runs in India in just 33 innings. In addition, he became the first player to score 300-plus runs in a three-match series twice, underlining his status as the world’s top-ranked ODI batter.

His 206 is also the highest individual score in an ODI run-chase. The only other double century while batting second came from Glenn Maxwell, for Australia against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup. The previous best by an opener in a chase was Fakhar Zaman’s 193 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2021.

With the series secured, Gill’s form at the top of the order, backed by Rohit Sharma’s return to fluency, is a major positive for India as they build towards bigger challenges in the format.
