Rohit Sharma Keeps High-Knee Century Celebration Meaning a Secret

Rohit Sharma was happy to talk about India’s huge chase in Guwahati, but one topic stayed off limits. The India opener declined to explain the unusual high-knee celebration he performed after reaching a century in the second ODI against West Indies.

A Chase to Remember

Rohit scored 101 off 75 balls and built a commanding partnership with Shubman Gill as India hunted down a target of 406. The chase was completed in just 43.3 overs, after India had fielded all 50 overs earlier in the day. The result was all the more striking given the scale of the target, and it showed the strength of the opening stand.

The moment he reached three figures, Rohit broke into a sequence of high-knee hops. The gesture stood out because it was so different from the restrained celebrations usually associated with him. It also looked deliberate, and it quickly drew attention from fans and commentators.

A Personal Gesture, Not for Sharing

Asked directly what the celebration meant, Rohit made it clear that the answer would stay with him. He described it as something personal, saying that some things are meant to be kept to yourself. He has not revealed the meaning publicly, and reportedly not even to teammate Ravindra Jadeja.

Rohit also turned down suggestions that he should opt for a more theatrical celebration. He pointed to the physical effort involved after such a demanding innings, which underlined the stamina needed to take part in a chase of this size.

For now, the meaning of the high-knee hops remains a private matter. What India’s supporters will remember is the century, the partnership with Gill and a record-setting run chase in Guwahati.
