Gill Confirms Rohit, Virat in World Cup Mix

India’s newly appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill has dropped a significant hint about the future of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, confirming both stalwarts remain firmly in contention for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Speaking at the pre-match press conference before the second Test against West Indies, Gill emphasized the invaluable experience the duo brings to Indian cricket.

“The experience that they have and the matches they have won for India is really valuable. Very few players provide this skill and experience. They are definitely in the mix for the World Cup 2027,” Gill stated, putting to rest speculation about the veterans’ long-term prospects.

New Era Begins With Veterans’ Support

The 25-year-old’s appointment as ODI captain marks a generational shift in Indian cricket, with Rohit stepping down from the leadership role. However, both Rohit and Virat are set to return to action after seven months when India faces Australia in a series beginning October 19. Recent reports suggested their continued selection would depend on performance, given both now feature in limited formats.

Gill’s Captaincy Revelation

The Indian captain also revealed he had advance knowledge of his appointment to the ODI leadership role. “I knew a little before it was announced. I’m very excited to lead my country in this format. I’m looking forward to the future and staying as present as possible,” Gill commented, expressing enthusiasm about leading India’s transition phase.

With the 2027 World Cup scheduled across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, India appears to be balancing youth development with leveraging the championship-winning experience of their established stars, ensuring continuity while building for the future.
