Shubman Gill Climbs to Second in All-Time ODI Averages

India captain Shubman Gill has moved to second place among batters with the highest averages in ODI history, with a minimum of 1,000 runs. The rise follows his unbeaten 223 in Guwahati on September 30. The knock steered India to an eight-wicket win in a 406-run chase against West Indies and an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

Records Tumble in Guwahati

Gill reached his double century in just 117 balls, the fastest in ODI history. His 223 is also the highest score in an ODI run chase, and he registered the fastest 150 by an Indian batter. The innings lifted his career average to 65.12, past USA’s Delhi-born batter Milind Kumar, who has 1,214 runs from 27 innings at 63.89, with four hundreds and seven fifties.

After 68 innings, Gill has 3,712 ODI runs, including 11 centuries and 20 fifties. That is a remarkable return for an opener.

A Dominant 2026

Gill’s calendar year has been outstanding. He has scored 894 runs in 10 innings at an average of 127.71, with three centuries and five fifties, making him the leading ODI run-scorer of 2026. This comes despite being dropped from the T20I squad earlier in the year. While much of the talk ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup centres on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Gill has firmly established himself among the world’s best batters.

Next, Gill faces a stern test in New Zealand, where seaming conditions will challenge him. He is yet to score an ODI century in SENA countries and will prepare for both the ODI series and the Test matches there. How he handles those conditions will help decide whether he can threaten the all-time average record held by a former India coach.
