Bhaichung Bhutia Slams India-Brazil Friendly as “Circus” Ahead of Kolkata Clash

Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia has criticised the India vs Brazil friendly scheduled for Saturday at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium, saying the match makes “no sense” for the country’s football development. Speaking to The Indian Express a day before the game, Bhutia admitted he would have loved to face Brazil as a player and acknowledged the appeal for fans, but questioned whether such fixtures serve the federation’s real purpose.

Questioning the Federation’s Priorities

“Is the federation’s job to give the players an opportunity to play against Brazil or is it their job to develop football for the longer run?” Bhutia asked. He argued that India should earn matches against such giants on merit rather than purchasing them. Bhutia was among the first to object after the friendly was announced on July 30, and he even urged fans to boycott the game.

The Financial Concern

At the heart of Bhutia’s objection is money. He believes paying Rs 50-60 crore for a single friendly is illogical, particularly when the All India Football Federation (AIFF) faces budget deficits and domestic clubs continue to struggle. In his view, those funds would be better spent strengthening the grassroots and club ecosystem.

Bhutia suggested India instead focus on competitive tournaments such as the ASEAN Cup, or build a collaboration with Brazil, as Japan has done, rather than hosting one-off exhibition games that fail to deliver long-term growth.

The Brazil match is the second of three high-profile fixtures India is hosting. It follows a surprising 1-1 draw against Panama in Bengaluru and precedes a visit from two-time World Cup winners Uruguay in Kolkata on Tuesday.
