Shubman Gill Becomes India’s Top WTC Run-Scorer

NEW DELHI: Shubman Gill has etched his name in Indian cricket history by becoming the country’s leading run-scorer in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), surpassing former captain Virat Kohli’s tally during the ongoing Test series against the West Indies.

The 25-year-old opener continued his impressive form with a second consecutive half-century, building on his fifty from the opening Test at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. This consistent performance has propelled him to the top of India’s WTC run-scoring charts.

Gill’s Remarkable WTC Statistics

Gill has accumulated 2,757 runs across 39 WTC matches at an impressive average of 42.41. His record includes a remarkable highest score of 269, complemented by nine centuries and nine fifties. These numbers reflect his growing maturity and consistency at the international level.

By comparison, Kohli, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, scored 2,617 runs in 46 WTC matches at an average of 35.36. Despite playing more matches, Kohli’s tally fell short of Gill’s achievement, though the veteran registered 11 fifties and five centuries during his WTC career.

India’s WTC Leaders

Gill now stands ahead of illustrious teammates including Rohit Sharma (2,716 runs), Rishabh Pant (2,731 runs), and Kohli in India’s WTC rankings. However, on the global leaderboard, England’s Joe Root dominates with 6,080 runs at an average of 52.86, followed by Australia’s Steve Smith (4,278 runs) and Marnus Labuschagne (4,225 runs).

This milestone marks another significant chapter in Gill’s rapidly ascending Test career, establishing him as India’s premier batsman in the current WTC cycle.
