On Thursday, Congress formally appointed Siddaramaiah as Karnataka’s chief minister. DK Shivakumar will remain the sole deputy chief minister and will continue to lead the Karnataka Congress, according to AICC general secretary KC Venugopal.
“Shivakumar will serve as PCC president until the end of the parliamentary elections.” “The CM, Deputy CM, and a group of ministers will be sworn in on May 20th,” Venugopal stated at the press conference.
When asked about the rumoured power-sharing formula, which suggests rotating tenure for both Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, Venugopal replied, “Power-sharing formula means sharing it with the people of Karnataka.”
Venugopal explained the delay in making the announcement, saying, “In the last few days, we were trying to reach a consensus.” We have vibrant leaders in Karnataka. Siddaramaiah is an experienced and senior politician… everyone wants to be CM, and both deserve it. Our Congress leader is holding a series of meetings with key leaders. Finally, the President of the Congress made a choice.”
“Both Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar are capable of becoming CM,” AICC Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala remarked. The Congress has also announced that ‘like-minded’ party leaders will be invited to the swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, implying that the event will serve as a forum for opposition unity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The formal statement comes after days of heated huddles from Bengaluru to the national capital, where both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have staked their claims to the position of the chief minister. The Congress Legislative Party (CLP) will meet again Thursday evening in Bengaluru, just days after authorising Kharge to choose the next Chief Minister.
“Whatever the AICC said, that is my response as well,” Siddaramaiah told reporters.
Shivakumar tweeted a photo of himself with Siddaramaiah and Kharge, saying, “Karnataka’s secure future and the welfare of our individuals is our top priority, and we are united in ensuring that.”
