Sikkim Land Slide: 500 tourist rescued by Indian Army

A defence spokesman said on Saturday that the Indian Army rescued 500 stranded tourists, including 54 kids, from north Sikkim as torrential rain triggered landslides and roadblocks in sections of the Himalayan state.

On Friday, heavy rain fell in Lachen, Lachung, and Chungthang.

Due to landslides and obstructions en approach, he said roughly 500 visitors coming to Lachung and Lachen Valley were stranded at Chungthang due to the downpour.

“On the request of SDM Chungthang, troops from the Indian Army’s Trishakti Corps swung into action and rescued the stranded tourists.”

“Among the stranded tourists were 216 men, 113 women, and 54 kids, relocated to three different army camps.” “They were given hot meals and warm clothing,” a representative for the defence stated.

He further stated, “The troops’ quick reaction prevented any mishap.” Efforts are being made to open the roads to vehicular traffic as quickly as feasible. The tourists will be given every aid until the path is cleared for their next excursion.”

He claimed that the military left their quarters to accommodate the tourists and make them comfortable for the night.

According to the source, three medical teams have been formed to assess the health of all travellers.

“The initial medical check-up by the army medical teams found all tourists stable,” he added, adding that a woman who had visited Gurudongmar Lake complained of severe headache as well as dizziness.

“She showed acute mountain sickness and was given immediate medical attention.” The woman was sent to an ICU in a medical facility. “She was stable this morning,” the official noted.
