Special Assembly Session on Feb 20 for Maratha Reservation: Cabinet Decision

The Maharashtra state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has announced the convening of a special one-day session of the state legislature on February 20 to address the demands regarding Maratha reservation.

Activist Manoj Jarange Patil’s hunger strike triggers action

The decision to convene the special session follows Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil’s hunger strike at Antarwali Saarati village in Jalna district. Patil initiated the hunger strike to press for a special legislative session to discuss matters related to Maratha reservation and to convert the draft notification concerning ‘blood relatives’ of Kunbi Marathas into law.

Demands for Maratha inclusion in OBC

Patil, who began his indefinite hunger strike on February 10, is demanding the inclusion of Marathas in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category to secure reservation. This hunger strike marks the fourth time in less than a year that Patil has resorted to such measures to advocate for Maratha community rights.

State government’s response to previous protests

Patil’s hunger strike comes after a recent protest march to Mumbai on January 26, which was withdrawn following the issuance of a draft notification by the state government. The draft recognized ‘sage soyare’ or blood relatives of Maratha individuals with Kunbi community lineage as Kunbi, enabling them to avail of OBC reservation. The protest was halted in the presence of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who presented the draft to Patil.

Health concerns arise as Patil’s condition worsens

However, Patil’s health deteriorated on Wednesday, prompting medical intervention to hydrate his frail body with saline water. Despite visible signs of health complications, including blood oozing from his nostrils, Patil has refused medical treatment, indicating his steadfast commitment to his cause.
