Stan Wawrinka Three-time Grand Slam Champion was soundly beaten 6-0 7-6(2) Lorenzo Musetti a teenager, who on Tuesday won the first round of the Italian Open for the first time on the professional circuit.

It was just a second game of the ATP Tour for the 18-year-old Italian who came through three qualifying rounds before vigorously putting up the 35-year-old Swiss to start a second-round encounter with Kei Nishikori from Japan.

But Musetti kept his nerve to take second set tiebreak and also the match. Earlier, with emphatic straight-sets victories, Denis Shapovalov and Andrey Rublev had cruised into the second round.

Canadian seed 12th Shapovalov, who has entered the United States. Open last week’s quarter-finals, shook off jet lag to overcome Guido Pella 6-2 6-3, shooting seven aces and 23 winners past Argentina.

Ninth seed Rublev, playing his first game at the Foro Italico, beat qualifier Facundo Bagnis 6-4 6-4 to secure a place in the second round where Hubert Hurkacz will face off.

In the women’s draw, Angélique Kerber was knocked out on Czech Katerina Siniakova in a 6-3 6-1 loss while Coco Gauf claimed her first-ever match on clay.

Kerber, who has reached the U.S. final-16. Available, lasted on the claycourt for just 69 minutes as Siniakova advanced in straight sets with five service breaks.

In the second set, Kerber was almost bagged before saving three match points to break in the contest for the first time, but Siniakova broke back to seal victory in the next frame.

American teenager Gauff came back from 4-2 down in the opening set to defeat Tunisian Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-3 in her first-ever main draw match on clay.
