After creating a spectacular Test debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Indian opener Mayank Agarwal hit the headlines back in 2018. His batting genius turned out to be so outstanding against a powerful Australian bowling line-up that he ousted the likes of Murali Vijay as well as Shikhar Dhawan from the Indian Test set-up.

Mayank changed batting stance says Sunil Gavaskar:

Mayank is back a few years down the road, to the place where his international journey started. But guess what, unlike his former Down Under tour, the Aussies are no longer scared of him.

Mayank managed scores of 17, 9, 0 as well as 5 in the two tests in the ongoing Test series. The worrying aspect is that his methods of getting out of any game are raising suspicions rather than his scores.

Speaking on the same subject, former Indian captain & batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes that the reason behind the battle is Mayank’s changed batting stance.

Gavaskar during an Australia station interview:

His new stance provides him with less backfoot options, which he can’t do on Australian fields. “Inside the left-arm pacer, it can allow him to cover for that movement,” Gavaskar said while an interview with an Australian station.

The former captain further clarified that the key cause of the issue was the distance between Mayank’s legs. In necessary to protect for the ball coming in, Gavaskar instructed the struggling Indian opener to open up his spot. “It can help him protect the inside of the left-arm pacer for that movement,” added Gavaskar.

Deep Dasgupta on Mayank:

Besides Gavaskar, Deep Dasgupta is yet another retired cricketer who, in Mayank’s place, pointed out the issue. Dasgupta claimed that Mayank’s wrists were trapped behind his right hip, enabling him to combat an incoming delivery with less assistance.

Once too, it happened to me since it needs to be focused on. He’d probably be able to put his wrists together so he could get to the ball faster,’ Dasgupta said.
