Surat Municipal Corporation to Open Five New Suman Schools

The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is set to expand its educational offerings by launching five new Suman schools, which will serve students in grades 9 to 12.

These schools, operated by the civic body, are scheduled to open in the next academic year and have a planned intake of over 1,200 students.

Locations for New Schools by Surat Municipal Corporation:

The new schools will be strategically located in different areas to accommodate the city’s growing educational needs, particularly in newly added regions:

  • Sachin-Pali Area: Two schools will be established here.
  • Sarthana, Katargam, and Limbayat Areas: Each area will have one new school.

Approval and Next Steps:

The proposal for the new schools received approval from the SMC Standing Committee on August 16. Rajan Patel, the Standing Committee chairman, confirmed the decision and mentioned that school plots have been identified, with a ground-breaking ceremony to follow soon.

The Surat Suman School Board will now seek formal permission from the education department to establish these schools. It is noteworthy that Education Minister Praful Pansuriya, who hails from Surat, may play a significant role in this expansion.

Over 14,100 students are currently enrolled across 23 Suman schools in Surat. The schools, which were initially launched in 1999 to curb the dropout rate after class 7, offer education in multiple languages, including Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, and English. Classes for grades 11 and 12 were added in 2022.

Fee Structure Declared by Surat Municipal Corporation:

Education in Suman schools is free for girls. The fee for boys is Rs 200 for classes 9 and 10, while those in classes 11 and 12 must pay Rs 1,000.

This expansion seeks to meet the increasing demand for high school education in Surat, particularly in newly developed areas.
