BCCI Sacks Suryakumar Yadav as T20I Captain After World Cup Win

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly relieved Suryakumar Yadav of the T20I captaincy and excluded him from future selection, according to a report by The Indian Express. The decision, taken in consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir and the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar, marks the end of one of India’s most decorated short-format tenures — the 2026 T20 World Cup final against New Zealand is expected to be Suryakumar’s last international appearance.

Suryakumar was appointed permanent T20I captain in July 2024, succeeding Rohit Sharma. At the time of his appointment, he was the top-ranked T20I batter in the world, having edged out Hardik Pandya for the role despite the all-rounder’s more extensive experience as a stand-in captain.

A captain who won it all — then lost his bat

Under Suryakumar’s leadership, India enjoyed extraordinary team success: eight consecutive bilateral series victories, the 2025 Asia Cup, and a historic defence of the T20 World Cup title in 2026. Yet beneath these team triumphs, his personal form deteriorated sharply. Since early 2025, he averaged just 12.84 runs across 25 matches and managed only 270 runs throughout the 2026 IPL season — figures that ultimately convinced the BCCI it was time to move on.

“Under Surya’s captaincy, the team did win the T20 World Cup but keeping his form and future in mind, they felt it’s time to move on,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying. “He won’t be considered for selection, and the decision will be conveyed to Surya soon.”
